How low can you go (lo-go, get it?)?

Frank Walker must be delighted with the London Olympic logo debacle. The flying banana at £240k now looks like a complete bargain. At £400k, you’d really expect the logo to be finished properly. Here’s how it should look:

It amazes me how design companies can justify charging so much for what seems like a relatively simple bit of art/branding.
The only thing that amazes me more is that governments accept these rather lacking attempts at logos.
Looking at both logo’s themselves, a “golden bird” means virtually nothing to most people. How does it uniquely identify Jersey, or differenciate it from the competition?
As has been illustrated perfectly by common public opinion, it fails on all accounts, even with trying to portray any form of flying creature made of precious metal, hence the more popular name “flying banana”.
I’m sure a local company would have done a far better job of portraying Jersey.
As for the olympic logo, what on earth is “2012″ ment to mean to anyone if they can actually decipher the digits from the poor typography. To get any further information from the “logo” you have to study it in detail to read the small print pointing out that it’s something about the olympic games. I hate to point out the obvious, but in both cases each defeats the purpose of a logo to my understanding.
I’m appalled at how much money is wasted over here (although not altogether suprised bearing in mind we have the muppets running the show!). I don’t feel that a “flying banana” signifies anything about our Island and I personally feel that a logo isn’t necessarily what we need to advertise the Island, perhaps a picture would sum it up better? Do the states truly believe that this is seriously going to increase the Islands revenue?! (are they having a laugh as per usual…)
This is just another huge waste of the tax payers money as was the mickey mouse clock near the weighbridge and noahs ark on the front….need I go on?!
I certainly agree that a local company could have easily done us proud and probably created something far more asthetically pleasing and individual than the “golden goose” which we’ve been presented and now seem to be lumbered with.
As with everything else that happens over here the public only find out when its too late and the money’s already been spent…hmmmm can’t think why?
