How to make money from blogging

This is a question I’m often asked by clients. Darren Rowse (of ProBlogger fame, and reputedly earns $30,000 a month from blogging) describes in a seminal blog the following income streams:

  1. Advertising Programs, e.g.  - Adsense Chitika’s eMiniMalls and WidgetBucks, Text Link Ads. Azoogle Ads, Intelli Txt, DoubleClick, Tribal Fusion,
    Adbrite, Clicksor, AdHearUs,Kanoodle, Pheedo, TextAds, Bidvertiser, Fastclick 
    and Value Click and BlogAds - one of the first blog specific ad networks.
  2. RSS Advertising 
  3. Sponsorship, e.g. Ricoh sponsor Digital Camera Blog. 
  4. Affiliate Programs -  Amazon, Linkshare,Clickbank and Commission Junction 
  5. Digital Assets 
  6. Blog Network Opportunities 
  7. Business Blog Writing Opportunities 
  8. Non Blogging Writing Opportunities 
  9. Donations 
  10. Flipping Blogs
  11. Merchandising 
  12. Consulting and Speaking 

All of this is well and good, but I think if you’re looking to make money out of blogging, I think you’re missing the point. Blogging is atomistic, point-to-point publishing. You publish what the reader wants, not what you can monetize. Make something useful, and if it’s truly useful, you won’t be able to avoid making money from it.
